TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The Internal Revenue Service says an Arizona tax preparer has been charged with conspiracy and aiding and assisting in false statements included in tax returns.

The Tucson office of the IRS’ criminal investigation arm Thursday announced the indictment that was filed earlier this month against Thomas Rampetsreiter.

The indictment alleges Rampetsreiter was involved in a scam that filed more than 400 fraudulent tax returns for a combined tax loss of more than $2.2 million.

Fake businesses were created, along with fabricated expenses, deductions and losses for each one, allegedly allowing the preparer to fraudulently understate or eliminate clients’ tax liabilities for several years.

Federal court records available online do not list a defense attorney who would be able to comment on the charges.
