PELZER, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 45-year-old inmate serving a life sentence has been killed in a fight at a South Carolina prison.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office said Carl Andrew Pollen Jr. died from head injuries at the Perry Correctional Institute near Pelzer around 1:15 a.m. Monday.

Prison officials said in a statement that Pollen was in a fight in his cell when he was killed. They did not release additional details.

Pollen had been in state prisons since 2002 after pleading guilty to murder in the death of a Myrtle Beach motel owner who employed him in 1999.

Pollen’s girlfriend 45-year-old Chadisty Sage is serving a 45 year sentence in the beating and stabbing death during a robbery of 65-year-old Clara Payne, who owned The Outrigger Motel.
