WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Federal authorities say a Connecticut man has been sentenced to five years in prison for purchasing child pornography from a secret website hosted on a darknet.

Mark Rohrer, of West Hartford, was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty in September to downloading child porn from a specialized part of the internet hosted on an encrypted network. Rohrer was first taken into custody in April 2018 when federal agents raided his West Hartford home, seizing two computers.

Prosecutors say the 38-year-old Rohrer and others used a specialized computer network that hid their identities in order to visit sites hidden from the traditional internet.

Rohrer’s attorney argued his client has otherwise never run afoul of the law.

He was ordered to report to prison in May.
