PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - A man who was shot in the face by a Peoria police sergeant after a traffic stop has been released from a hospital and booked into jail.

Police say 23-year-old Samuel Denk of Peoria is being held on suspicion of aggravated assault.

It was unclear Tuesday if Denk has a lawyer.

Police say the sergeant stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on March 27 and fired at least one round at the suspect.

The sergeant says the driver had reached for a gun on his lap.

Detectives on scene reported they recovered the suspect’s gun.

The name of the sergeant hasn’t been released.
