LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a police chase that started with an officer checking on a report about vehicle break-ins has ended with a man shot to death by police.

Authorities say the chase lasted an hour and went through two counties early Wednesday after the report of cars being broken into in Lexington.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says 26-year-old Zachary Kinard had two stolen guns and pointed one of the weapons at deputy Tyler Hazel, who fired back.

Lott says Kinard ended the chase in Pelion on land owned by his family.

Lott says he thinks the shooting was justified, but he will defer to the State Law Enforcement Division investigation requested by Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon.
