CRAIG, Colo. (AP) - A northwest Colorado woman has been arrested on a child abuse charge after her 3-year-old son was killed in a house fire on Christmas Eve.

The Craig Daily Press reported Thursday 26-year-old Vanessa Allison Jenkins faces a charge of child abuse negligently causing death.

She hasn’t entered a plea, and it wasn’t known whether she had an attorney who could speak on her behalf.

Police said earlier that evidence suggested Lane Ernest Cullen had been playing with fire before he died. An arrest affidavit said police found a melted cigarette lighter near the spot where the boy’s body was found.

Police say Jenkins told them her son had used a lighter to set fire to bedding at least once before the fatal fire.

Jenkins was being held on $10,000 bail.
