PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gasoline prices in southern New England remain well below the national average.

AAA Northeast said Monday its weekly survey found self-serve regular selling for an average of $2.55 cents per gallon in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. That’s 19 cents below the national average of $2.74 per gallon.

The average price rose 2 cents in Massachusetts over the past week, while remaining unchanged in Rhode Island.

The director of public and legislative affairs for AAA Northeast, Mary Maguire, said motorists could be see prices rise in the coming weeks as inventory tightens while demand increases. Maguire says U.S. refineries are operating at 86 percent capacity compared to 93 percent at this time a year ago.
