PIEDMONT, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina teenager has died after he jumped off the running board of his family’s SUV.

News outlets report it happened about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday in Piedmont. Emergency responders found the teen unresponsive in the road around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers say 14-year-old Luis Osorio was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Lance Cpl. Joe Hovis says Osorio jumped on the running board as it was leaving a residence. Hovis says the SUV traveled a short distance before the teen jumped off the SUV and was fatally injured.

His death remains under investigation.

An autopsy is scheduled Wednesday

Osorio was a ninth-grade student at Southside High School. Officials say grief counselors would be at the school to assist students and staff.
