The Washington Nationals signed 33-year-old infielder Asdrúbal Cabrera to a major-league deal Monday, multiple reports said.
The Texas Rangers released Cabrera Saturday after designating him for assignment. He batted .235 with 12 home runs and 51 RBI for Texas in 93 games this year.
The Nationals will mark Cabrera’s fourth team in the past two years, but it’s not his first stop in Washington. The Cleveland Indians traded Cabrera to Washington in a midseason deal in 2014, and he played 49 games and four playoff games for the Nationals.
The Nationals signed Cabrera while coping with injuries old and new around their infield. First baseman Ryan Zimmerman continues to fight plantar fasciitis that has hampered him for much of the year, and utility man Howie Kendrick recently joined Zimmerman on the 10-day injured list with a hamstring strain.
