NBA Commissioner Emeritus David Stern suffered a “sudden” brain hemorrhage on Thursday and underwent emergency surgery, the league said in a statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with David and his family,” the statement said.
Stern, 77, served as NBA commissioner from 1984 to 2014. With help from stars like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, he is credited with helping to popularize the game worldwide.
He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a member of its Class of 2014, and was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2016.
