DUBLIN, Ga. (AP) - A high-speed chase ended Thursday with a Georgia sheriff’s deputy intentionally hitting a fleeing car, causing the car to wreck and a passenger to die.
The Georgia State Patrol said Friday that 40-year-old Andrea Jones died.
Laurens County Sheriff Larry Dean tells local news outlets that Dodge County officials called his officers seeking help with a chase.
Laurens County deputies deployed sticks with nails in them to try to stop the car, but Dean says the driver twice swerved around them.
Dean says that as the driver approached the intersection of U.S. 441 and Interstate 20 in Dublin a Laurens deputy executed a pursuit intervention maneuver, ramming the fleeing vehicle to make it spin out.
Dean says the fleeing driver was putting people in “grave danger” and that the deputy was trying to protect others in harm’s way.
The driver, Malik Harmon, 29, was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital. Also taken to a hospital was 27-year-old Deandre Munn, another passenger.
No deputies were injured.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.
