FORT KNOX, Ky. (AP) - About 350 free Christmas trees are being offered to active military service members and their families after a tree lighting ceremony at a Kentucky Army post this week.

The Trees for Troops program is providing the trees to be distributed Thursday at Fort Knox.

The tree lighting is set for 5:30 p.m. the same day at the Post Gazebo across from Brooks Parade Field. Fort Knox says units, organizations and schools as well as area businesses and municipalities also have provided 4-by-8-foot (1.2-by-2.4 meter) holiday cards surrounding Brooks Field.

The trees will be distributed until 8 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Free hot chocolate and cookies will be available.
