FORT LUPTON, Colo. (AP) - A 19-year-old man accused of shooting a Colorado police officer in the face has been charged with attempted murder and other crimes.

Matthew Cotter of Lochbuie was charged Friday in the shooting of Fort Lupton police Sgt. Christopher Pelton, who remains in critical condition after undergoing two surgeries.

KMGH-TV reported that, according to Cotter’s arrest affidavit, Cotter’s ex-girlfriend’s family reported he was suicidal and was parked outside their home and texting with her Monday night. Cotter later told investigators he ran behind a fence after hearing approaching sirens and watched police through the slats. He said he fired at Pelton after catching him “off guard” and then was shot by police as he ran away.

Cotter is also still in the hospital and it’s not known if he has a lawyer.
