SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - A California water utility says customer information may have been exposed through unauthorized access to a computer server used to process payments.
The San Bernardino Sun reported a vendor for the Cucamonga Valley Water District found that a server handling credit card transactions was breached between Aug. 26 and Oct. 14.
Investigators did not immediately find conclusive evidence of data theft from vendor Central Square, but officials say some payment details may have been taken.
The district serves customers in Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, Fontana, and Ontario.
The utility says the breach did not affect every customer and those whose personal information may have been compromised will receive letters from the water district.
The district says the cybersecurity firm hired to investigate the breach has taken steps to prevent further unauthorized access of the Click2Gov web payment portal.
Officials say the portal is used by Cucamonga Valley and other utility customers.
Further details regarding the breach and potential suspects were not immediately released.
