MONTGOMERY, W.Va. (AP) - Police in West Virginia say an early morning altercation near Montgomery city hall led to an officer fatally shooting a man on the sidewalk.

WCHS-TV reports that the man was identified Monday afternoon as 34-year-old Eric Young of Montgomery by the Kanawha County Sheriff’s department. The shooting happened at 4:20 a.m. behind Montgomery’s City Hall.

Montgomery Police Chief Paris Workman told the news station that the shooting by a Monthomery officer happened after an altercation on a sidewalk.

The officer, who has not been named, has worked in the department for three years and was placed on paid administrative leave.
