DENVER (AP) - Denver Zoo officials say a 23-year-old giraffe was humanely euthanized following years of health problems.

KUSA-TV reports the zoo announced Tuesday the death of the reticulated giraffe named Masika, who zookeepers referred to as “The Princess.”

Masika was born at the Denver Zoo. She gave birth to eight calves during her lifetime.

Masika in recent years developed health problems common in older giraffes.

Officials say veterinarians and zookeepers have been monitoring her health in recent months and noticed her quality of life had diminished.

The zoo says in a statement that it makes “every effort to ensure that an animal’s last days are humane and dignified.”
