BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - A tank overflow is being blamed for a spill of more than 46,000 gallons of saltwater in Bottineau County.

The state Oil and Gas Division says 31 Operating LLC on Monday reported the Sunday spill of 1,100 barrels of brine at an oil tank facility about 8 miles east of Mohall. Brine, or saltwater, is a byproduct of oil production.

The spilled saltwater was contained on-site. A state inspector is monitoring cleanup.

The story has been corrected to show that a tank overflow, not a valve failure, caused the spill.
