CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The death toll is now at four from a house fire in early January that killed three children and their mother.

The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office tells The Charlotte Observer that 4-month-old Axel Camilo Mendez Sanchez died at Carolinas Medical Center. He had been at the hospital since the fire on Jan. 2.

The baby’s half brother, 9-year-old Leonel Alexander Villagrez Sanchez, died Jan. 2 from injuries sustained in the fire. Axel’s sister, 2-year-old Aranza Santa Mendez Sanchez, died Jan. 3. And the mother of the three deceased children, Ana Sanchez, died Jan. 5.

A family friend says a fourth child, 7-year-old Abner Francisco Villagrez Sánchez, is still recovering from injuries

Fire officials say they believe a lit candle caused the fire.
