BRISTOL, R.I. (AP) - Roger Williams University in Rhode Island has named Ioannis Miaoulis (YAH’-nis me-OW’-lis) as its new president.

Trustees said Wednesday that Miaoulis was selected in large part for his previous successes in sparking interest and opportunity in the science, technology, engineering and math fields at his previous positions at the Museum of Science in Boston and as dean of Tufts University’s engineering school.

He is assuming the presidency as Roger Williams nears completion of a $14 million laboratories building for the engineering, computing and construction management school.

Miaoulis in a statement said Roger Williams “has all the ingredients to become a national model for transforming higher education.”

Miaoulis will become the Bristol-based university’s 11th president, succeeding Donald Farish, who died in July 2018. Andy Workman has been serving as interim president.
