MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (AP) - Authorities in North Carolina say some neighbors leaped into action and rescued three people trapped on a balcony during a fire at an apartment complex.

Local news outlets reports Morehead City Fire Chief Jamie Fulk says the neighbors rushed over to the second-floor balcony with a ladder and helped get the people down before emergency personnel arrived.

Fulk says the fire broke out just before 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Officials say a person inside the apartment where the fire began was taken to a hospital for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation.

Two apartments at the complex were affected by the fire, displacing five residents. The Red Cross is stepping in to assist those impacted by the fire, which is still under investigation.
