Prosecutors seek death penalty in killing of Nogales officer

NOGALES, Ariz. (AP) - The man accused of gunning down a Nogales police officer last year could face the death penalty if convicted.

Santa Cruz County prosecutors on Feb. 14 filed a notice that they intend to seek the death penalty for David Ernesto Murillo, who is charged with premeditated first-degree murder and numerous other crimes in the April 27 killing of Officer Jesus Cordova.

Cordova was killed while responding to an emergency call about a suspected armed carjacker.

Murillo’s defense lawyer did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
