PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s current Democratic Party chairman is seeking re-election with no known challengers.

Warwick Rep. Joseph McNamara announced on Tuesday that “the stakes in the next election cannot be understated.” The Providence Journal reports McNamara is a moderate Democrat who chairs the state House Committee on Health, Education & Welfare.

He was first elected as chair of Rhode Island’s dominant political party in October 2014, winning the vote unanimously.

McNamara says 2018 saw a wave of success for Democrats in Rhode Island, including the re-election of Gov. Gina Raimondo, but says the party must continue to build candidate training programs and community partnerships to make sure the party’s gains in the state are not lost.
