ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - After two inmates walked off from work-release programs in the last six weeks, North Carolina’s prisons director says officials in the western region are meeting with companies and reviewing requirements.
WLOS-TV reports that Prisons Director Kenneth Lassiter said deputies haven’t found that officials at Craggy Correctional Center did anything wrong. But a prison system spokesman says the work-release program terminated its contract with one company, after an inmate who walked off a construction job was charged with trying to rape a woman.
Lassiter says western regional prison directors are meeting with companies that do work-release and are going over security and monitoring requirements. He says 1,100 inmates are on work-release each day in the state and they’re looking at how to make sure there are no more walkoffs.
