TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) - State police say a man walking along the Garden State Parkway was struck and killed by an SUV in southern New Jersey.

William Swenson was in a travel lane when he was hit by the southbound vehicle around 12:10 a.m. Wednesday near milepost 81.7 in Toms River. The 55-year-old Beachwood man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

It’s not yet known why Swenson was walking on the roadway.

Authorities say the driver stopped and cooperated with troopers. It’s not clear whether any charges will be filed.

Troopers shut down two lanes of the highway for about two hours while the accident was investigated.
