A prosecutor working with special counsel Robert Mueller has left the team and returned to the Justice Department.

The departure of Scott Meisler signals that the nearly 20-month probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election may be close to wrapping up.

Mr. Meisler exited Mueller’s team in December, but will continue to work on cases he was assigned before departing the probe, CNN reported.

“Scott Meisler concluded his detail with the Special Counsel’s Office in December 2018 and returned to the Criminal Division but continues to represent the office on specific pending matters that were assigned to him during his detail,” spokesman Peter Carr told the network.

The report of Mr. Meisler’s departure comes roughly a week after acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker said the investigation was “close to being completed.”
