WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) - A 19-year-old Waukegan man has pleaded not guilty to killing a 4-year-old girl after officials said she spilled juice on a video game console.
The (Waukegan) News Sun reports prosecutors say they’ll pursue a natural life sentence for Johnathan Fair, who pleaded not guilty Thursday to first-degree murder in the December death of Skylar Mendez. Fair is held at the Lake County jail on $5 million bail. Authorities say the girl was the daughter of Fair’s girlfriend.
Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Scheller said Fair shook the girl and kicked her down a hallway until she passed out. Scheller said Fair brought the girl to the hospital, initially saying she fell and hit her head. Prosecutors say the girl died days later after attempts failed to relieve swelling in her brain.
