Communities to host events honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

WESTLAND, Mich. (AP) - Two Detroit-area communities will hold annual walks and ceremonies honoring civil rights icon the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Westland’s Freedom walk will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at the city’s public library. Participants are asked to gather at 8:30 a.m. at Westland City Hall.

Mayor William Wild and other elected officials are expected to speak during a 10 a.m. City Hall ceremony. Wild says the event remembers King’s life, legacy and vision” and reflects “on how we can best live up to his dream today.”

Southfield and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force will host a holiday peace walk starting at 9 a.m. Monday at Hope United Methodist Church. A program will be held at 11 a.m. at the Southfield Pavilion.
