NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A former Marine faces life in prison after being convicted of killing a friend in Louisiana with a bullet in the back.

The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office says in a news release that jurors found 29-year-old Laurence McKee guilty of second-degree murder Thursday in the death of 25-year-old Justin Scott.

The conviction carries a mandatory life sentence. McKee said he fired after Scott attacked and choked him, and the bullet ricocheted into Scott’s back.

Telephone text messages indicated the men had gone out drinking together earlier that night.

Prosecutors say that McKee appeared to cry while talking to a 911 operator, but was also recorded cursing at the dead man after he apparently thought he had hung up.

He was not a Marine at the time of the killing.
