NEW YORK (AP) - A New York City police detective has pleaded guilty to using stolen checks and bank account numbers to pay his mortgage and credit card bills.

Michael Bonanno pleaded guilty Friday in Manhattan federal court to one count of bank fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud.

Prosecutors say Bonanno and co-conspirator Domenic Aiello stole or attempted to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from multiple victims between November 2016 to March 2017.

Aiello pleaded guilty to the charges against him on Jan. 4.

The 44-year-old Bonanno served in the Crime Stoppers unit, where he investigated anonymous tips from the public.

His attorney, Edward Sapone, told the Daily News that Bonanno should be commended for “stepping up to the plate and accepting responsibility.”
