NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is apologizing and promising to fill potholes along Route 146 in North Smithfield that caused damage dozens of cars.

The agency tells WJAR-TV that between Thursday morning and Thursday night, a number of cars were damaged along both sides of the highway. AAA said it responded to 40 calls for assistance in that area.

The department made some short term repairs Friday and said a partial pave job is scheduled for Saturday.

The state blamed the potholes on a combination of recent deep freezes and thaws, as well as heavy rain.

Car owners have seven days from the incident to file a damage claim for reimbursement.
