LAUREL, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi police chief has died after an illness.
In a Facebook post Monday, the city of Laurel announced the “sudden and unexpected” death of Chief Tyrone Stewart. He was 48.
The city said Stewart was in critical condition Sunday, and his family requested privacy.

News outlets report that Stewart worked more than two decades in law enforcement in Jones County and Laurel. He had been police chief since 2011 in the city of about 18,500 residents.
On Twitter, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant asked people to pray for Stewart and his family.
