WINSTON, Mont. (AP) - A 21-year-old man is dead being trapped in a garage apartment after a fire broke out in the building in southwestern Montana.

The fire was reported shortly before 1 a.m. Monday near Winston.

Broadwater County Sheriff Wynn Meehan told the Helena Independent Record that the man likely became disorientated because of smoke inhalation. There was no accessible exit from the apartment above the detached garage. Someone from the main house put a ladder up to the apartment and broke a window but wasn’t able to guide the man out.

The garage and apartment were completely destroyed and the house also sustained some damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but Meehan doesn’t suspect foul play.
