MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (AP) - A former Burlington, Vermont, police officer is denying an accusation of inappropriately touching a 12-year-old girl in 2016.

Fifty-one-year-old Arthur Cyr appeared in Vermont Superior Court in Middlebury on Monday to answer a charge of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child. The Burlington Free Press reports he declined to comment while he was leaving court.

Prosecutors say the victim told police Cyr groped her during a New Year’s Eve party at his Bristol home. The victim’s mother told police she didn’t suspect anything inappropriate that night until her daughter told her in December 2018.

Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo says in a statement that Cyr served with the department from October 1995 until March 2016. He investigated child abuse cases for two years.
