DONALDSONVILLE, La. (AP) - A six-term Louisiana sheriff has stepped down and his chief deputy has been sworn in as his replacement.

The Advocate reports Sheriff Jeff Wiley stepped down Thursday as chief law enforcement officer of Ascension Parish.

A sheriff’s office spokeswoman says Chief Deputy Bobby Webre took the oath of office. Webre has been with the sheriff’s office for decades. He’s planning an inauguration ceremony Jan. 10.

The change of leadership happened ahead of Wiley daughter’s, Erin Wiley Lanoux, being sworn in as a parish court judge. Wiley had promised he wouldn’t remain in the sheriff’s office while Lanoux was holding public office should she win the judge’s race.

Wiley’s departure means the election to fill the remainder of his current term and the next full term will be held in the fall of 2019.
