CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - A Wyoming man accused of killing and abusing his ex-girlfriend’s two-year-old son will likely spend his life in prison under a plea agreement that allowed him to avoid the death penalty.
John Barrett was sentenced Friday to between 50 years and life in prison for second-degree murder and 20 to 25 years for child abuse. A judge said Barrett will serve the sentences consecutively.
The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports that Barrett tearfully told a judge that he punched his then-girlfriend’s son in the abdomen while babysitting in May 2017. The child died the next day.
Barrett’s attorneys said he did not intend to kill the boy but wanted to take responsibility for his actions.
Family members said the young boy loved trains, his twin brother and his older sister.
