CLOVER, S.C. (AP) - Police in South Carolina arrested a man accused of stealing two trees planted by a Girl Scouts troop.

News outlets report Clover police took Clifton Greene Jr. into custody Saturday.

A Facebook page for the town says a Japanese maple tree disappeared from the Clover Public Library in May. The Girl Scouts troop had planted it for a community project. The troop planted another tree after the first went missing. Then, the second tree was taken Friday.

Clover police says a tip led officers to arrest Greene Jr. for the theft of both trees. Capt. Logan McGarity says the officers re-planted the newer tree at the library.

Greene bonded out of the York County Detention Center on Sunday. It’s unclear whether he had an attorney who could comment.
