PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Historic flags that once waved above Rhode Island battlegrounds and the Statehouse remain in storage after being removed for restoration more than two years ago.

The 80 historic banners were taken down and placed in a special storage facility in Massachusetts in 2017 where they remain.

The Boston Globe reports there is no current plan for when or how the flags will return to the Statehouse, where they were put on public view a century ago.

The state’s Department of Administration is responsible for the flags and says their main goal is to keep them conserved and safely stored. The state is dealing with the cost of preservations competing with other priorities.

The collection in storage includes rare flags from the American Revolutionary War, the Civil War and World War I.
