ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - A Maryland judge has ordered a new psychiatric evaluation for a woman who’s been held in a high-security psychiatric hospital for five years, awaiting trial on charges she killed her two children.
The Washington Post reports Judge Robert Greenberg granted prosecutors’ request Wednesday, saying it was time to have “another set of eyes,” on 32-year-old Cathreine Hoggle’s schizophrenia diagnoses amid debate as to whether she can stand trial. Doctors have previously found Hoggle mentally incompetent to stand trial.
Prosecutors accuse Hoggle of faking the extent of her mental illness, but Hoggle’s attorneys defend the doctors’ findings.
Hoggle is charged with murder in the disappearance of her 2- and 3-year-old children in 2014.
The newspaper reports she has repeatedly tried to escape the psychiatric hospital where she’s held.
