SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah mother is in jail after authorities say she attempted to strangle her two young daughters.

Police records filed with the Davis County Jail show 27-year-old Karen Butterfield attempted to smother her two girls with a pillow Saturday before trying to strangle them. Police say the girls, ages 2 and 4, survived but suffered injuries to their necks.

Butterfield was booked into the jail on suspicion of attempted child-abuse homicide, assault and other charges.

She is being held without bail and doesn’t have a listed attorney.

Police say Butterfield was on probation after a previous domestic violence incident.

Butterfield’s husband recorded her threatening to kill herself and their daughters before he intervened. The woman told police she attempted to strangle her 2-year-old daughter to prove a point to her husband.
