PICAYUNE, Miss. (AP) - A city worker in Mississippi was passing by a home when he noticed it was on fire and saved a girl inside who had woken up to find smoke filling her room.

The Picayune Item reports Stanley Hart saw smoke coming from the house Tuesday morning. Hart and a neighbor, Mark Jones, arrived to find a 15-year-old girl inside who was knocking on the window for help to get out.

Hart called 911, and then he and Jones broke the window with a cinder block to rescue the teen. Fire officials say the initial investigation shows the fire started near the kitchen stove.

The 15-year-old was airlifted to a hospital in New Orleans. Her condition isn’t known. No one else was in the home at the time of the fire.
