BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - The Montana Public Service Commission has approved a $9.3 million electricity rate increase for Montana Dakota Utility customers in the state.

The Billings Gazette reports that the increase approved this week on a 3-1 vote is about $2.5 million less than what MDU originally requested.

The utility says rates will increase about $135 a year for MDU residential electric customers.

However, most of the increase is already on customer bills because MDU was awarded an interim increase while its rate case was being heard.

As part of a settlement with regulators and others, MDU agreed not to seek another rate change before June 2021.

MDU has about 26,000 electric customers in Montana.
