BOTHELL, Wash. (AP) - A Snohomish family whose son was fatally shot by police after a police chase has filed a civil claim against the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
KOMO-TV reports Jayni and Mike Peters are seeking damages in excess of $5 million for their son’s death in the Bothell area Oct. 23.
The family announced the filing during a news conference in their attorney Jeffrey Campiche’s office Thursday.
Campiche says Nickolas Peters should have been arrested for speeding away from deputies, not shot, and that officers were shouting conflicting commands at him before the shooting.
The Peters family is also suing the State of Washington, deputy Arthur Wallin and unnamed deputies. The sheriff’s office says Wallin remains on paid administrative leave.
The Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office says findings from the investigation are still under review.
