BURLINGTON, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina man is accused of crashing his car into a pond and then abandoning the submerged vehicle without notifying authorities of the wreck.

The Times-News reports 47-year-old Matthew Daniel Browning was charged Thursday with a hit-and-run causing property damage. Burlington police say Browning is believed to have taken a curve too fast, causing him to run off road, hit a fence and crash into the pond. Police say he was uninjured and went home.

Authorities found the vehicle the next morning, searched for victims and recovered the vehicle. Fire spokesperson Daniel Shoffner says a firefighter and officer suffered minor injuries. Police say about $3,000 of their equipment was ruined, and the fence’s damage totaled about $2,000.

It’s unclear if Browning has a lawyer.
