IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a University of California, Irvine, student reported being stabbed by an attacker while she was out walking her dog.

Campus police say the student reported the attack shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday. Authorities say the 22-year-old said a man attacked her from behind, tried to remove her clothing, struck her head and stabbed her.

Authorities say the man fled and police issued an alert and searched the area. They say they have no reason to believe the suspect is still in the area but have increased patrols.

The woman was taken to an area hospital. Authorities say she is in stable condition.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call campus police.
