ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Hundreds of people have rallied at the New York state Capitol to encourage lawmakers to approve drivers licenses for immigrants who entered the country illegally.

The group behind Tuesday’s event in Albany came from around the state and includes legal and undocumented immigrants, advocates and lawmakers sponsoring bills that would authorize licenses for immigrants.

Supporters say licenses would help immigrants get jobs, transport their family and apply for college and housing, while opponents say licenses shouldn’t be given to people who are in violation of federal immigration rules.

While there’s broad support for licenses among many lawmakers and Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the measure hasn’t been scheduled for a vote in the Democrat-controlled Legislature.
