ELON, N.C. (AP) - Adjunct professors at Elon University have voted to form a union, becoming the second group of adjunct faculty members in North Carolina to do so.

News outlets report adjuncts voted 112-68 on Tuesday in favor of affiliating with the Service Employees International Union.

University officials noted that they have a week to object to the election. They then have another two weeks after votes are certified to ask for a formal review.

Adjuncts at Elon announced in November that they hoped to form a union.

In 2016, adjuncts at Duke University formed a union. Under their first negotiated contract, they received average pay raises of 14 percent over three years and other benefits.

The SEIU says it represents 120,000 faculty members and graduate students at public and private colleges nationwide.
