COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - A judge is again refusing to dismiss manslaughter charges against a former Mississippi police officer.
The Commercial Dispatch reports Lowndes County Circuit Judge Lee Coleman rejected a defense motion Friday to dismiss the case for lack of prosecution.
Prosecutors for the attorney general’s office told Coleman the request was just a re-invented version of previous failed attempts to throw out the indictment.
Canyon Boykin, who is white, was indicted in the 2015 shooting death of a black man in Columbus.
Boykin says he shot Ricky Ball after the 26-year-old appeared to point a gun at Boykin during a foot chase.
Boykin settled a wrongful termination suit against Columbus last year. The city also settled a wrongful death lawsuit by Ball’s heirs.
No trial date for Boykin has been set.
