WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) - A West Virginia hospital has filed a federal lawsuit against a former employee who accused the hospital of improperly issuing payments and kickbacks in a lawsuit later joined by the federal government.
The Intelligencer reports Wheeling Hospital announced Monday it’s countersuing former executive vice president Louis Longo for breach of fiduciary duty and abuse of process.
Longo’s lawsuit was filed in 2017 and unsealed in December, when the U.S. Department of Justice intervened. He asserted the Catholic hospital’s physician compensation violated federal law by improperly paying millions in excessive compensation based on the volume or value of patient referrals.
Wheeling Hospital denies the complaint has merit. Its own complaint says Longo filed false claims in an attempt to procure a settlement. The report didn’t include Longo’s comment on the countersuit.
