NEW YORK (AP) - The mother of a New York City runner says she remembers “screaming in the streets” when she learned her daughter had been slain.
The Daily News says Catherine Vetrano battled tears as she testified Tuesday at the retrial of Chanel Lewis.
Vetrano says she had just returned home in Howard Beach, Queens, after having surgery in August 2016.
She was resting when her husband, Phillip, yelled that their daughter, Karina, wasn’t answering her phone while running on a nearby park trail.
Phillip Vetrano searched and found her body.
The defense said there was nothing of legal substance Catherine Vetrano could offer, but the judge allowed her to testify.
Defense attorney Jen Cheung says Lewis did not commit the “awful crime,” a confession was coerced and DNA evidence is suspect.
