BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Border patrol agents have charged a Vermont man accused of trying to smuggle five Mexican nationals across the Canadian border into the state.
The Caledonian-Record reports Matthew Prue, of Island Pond, was charged Monday with a felony of bringing in and harboring aliens.
The charge comes after border patrol agents arrested the five Mexican nationals near the Derby Line Port of Entry on March 21.
Agents say they saw an SUV pass by the suspected illegal border crossing multiple times and stopped the driver, identified as Prue.
They say Prue provided a cellphone number that was later found on phones in possession of the men accused of crossing illegally.
One man told authorities he paid $4,000 in Canadian dollars ($2,989) to be smuggled into the U.S.
